Models in beauty magazines will most likely be famous celebrities. They have smooth and perfect skin and hair. The models can either be wearing an outfit that stands out on the background or one that matches the magazine colors. In the above cover image of Zendaya, she is wearing a silky yellow dress that pops against the bright blue background and the red masthead. In the second image, Khloé is wearing a simple white shirt that is the same color as the masthead and cover lines.

Almost half of the individuals that voted on my survey wanted the title to be "True Beauty". True beauty is a good title and I will be using it in my magazine. True beauty is represented by a woman's inner self; their personality and character within. One person who voted also added a title called "All of US".

The title font that got the most votes was Great Vibes. This is a very fancy and sophisticated font while also being feminine because of the flowing connected characters. Great Vibes will be the font I will use for my title, considering it was my top choice as well. The other fonts could be used for the headings or cover lines included in my magazine. A picture of the font is shown below. 

I allowed this question to have multiple choices. The voters chose that the cover image should include a close up shot of a females makeup. They also chose that the cover should include colorful headings instead of simple headings. I agree will both these responses and will be using them in my magazine.  

The color scheme pink, white and black won by a tremendous amount. Considering this is a beauty magazine, I can see why these colors won. Black is a very sophisticated and intense color while the white helps to offset this and bring in a sense of calmness and purity. The color pink is perfect for a beauty magazine because it represents femininity and softness. All these colors will be incorporated into the cover page and throughout my magazine. 

This question asked where the location should be for the different photos included in the magazine. This was one of the only responses I didn't agree with. Since my color scheme will include pink, white and black, I think taking the photos at the beach will be better for the magazine. I can take the pictures on the sand or with the ocean in the background. A park in nature was a good choice but then I'd have to include trees and grass in the pictures and that wouldn't necessarily blend well with the colors.

For this survey question I asked what products people would want to see in the magazine. Skin care products got the most votes and then makeup products. Considering I am creating a beauty magazine, I will be using the products that we're most voted on. I also might include some hair product examples in the magazine because the cover will talk about hair in its cover lines.

Affordable makeup products and brands won up to half of the votes. This is a topic I am for sure going to be including in my magazine. The word "affordable" doesn't always mean cheap or bad quality, but instead it grabs peoples attention and makes them want to buy a product. The best skin care products got the next most amount of votes and will be good to include in my magazine in the section with skin care products (as seen above).

The best makeup brand that people want to see in the magazine is L'Oréal Paris. I personally love this brand and use their products often. This will be good for when I have to take pictures of these products for my magazine. NYX is the next product that won the most votes but I will be using the brand e.l.f. instead to advertise in my magazine.

I was instructed to make an audience profile for my beauty magazine. I used the website Prezi to make my presentation. I added information on what the audiences gender and age might be. As well as their interests and what they like or dislike to see in beauty magazines.

                                      Cover Page Analysis

These three cover examples fit in my beauty genre. Each of these magazine covers include monochromatic colors which provides a polished appearance. All of the covers use fonts that are uniform which contributes to the overall presence. The covers highlight specific features of each celebrity on the cover. Each cover also has a large masthead that stands out to the reader.

Harper’s Bazaar is an American monthly women’s magazine. The main image is showing American media personality and model, Kylie Jenner. She is modeling with light pink feathers surrounding her. The masthead is a shade of darker pink than the feathers which makes it pop out and become one of the most noticeable things on the cover. The color pink used in this cover may represent femininity or love while the black wording brings in a sense of sophistication. The font used is very elegant looking and is all capitalized. Using all caps in a magazine cover helps to add personality to the page and makes all the cover lines legible and easy to read.

This is another magazine cover from Harper’s Bazaar. The main image is of Demi Lovato, an American singer and actor. She is wearing a gorgeous Valentino yellow gown. Her stylist might've chosen this color yellow for Demi to wear because it represents happiness and hope, given she just went through a near fatal overdose. The black and white wording is very fitting for this cover and can be associated with life and death. The assortment of colors is eye-catching as they stand out with the vibrant background and provide insight on the big stories within the magazine. The font used is called Didot and is unique to Bazaar. It is uniform throughout these magazines and provides a sleek look for the readers. 

Allure is a very famous beauty and fashion magazine brand. The main image is of American model Kendall Jenner. The masthead and the outfit the model is wearing are the same color red which brings a sense of unity and really ties the cover together. A lot of magazines will have a part of the main image and the headings or cover lines be the same color. This draws buyers eyes to the magazine and makes them intrigued on what's inside. The red being against a simple dark background, allows the colors to stand out. The font in this cover varies between all capitalization and bold wording. This grabs the readers attention and focuses them on certain headings and cover lines.

                Beauty Magazine Conventions Part 1

In my magazine I will be focusing on beauty. In the first step of the magazine process, I will be doing research and analyzing different beauty magazines and their conventions.

Advertisements: Many advertisements that are in beauty magazines include makeup, fashion and health tips. Advertisement campaigns are included in magazines to create a message and to get people to buy a certain product. The ads shown in the magazines have to correlate with the message the author is trying to get across. For example, if a magazine has a page spread about the top beauty products in 2022 there might also be an advertisement for one of those certain products. These magazines may also include small samples of perfume or makeup attached to the pages if that is what they are advertising. 

Beauty magazine topics: You will be able to find many different topics in beauty magazines. Magazine publishers will likely include celebrity news and gossip to intrigue viewers. Simple beauty tips and hairstyles can attract people to buy the magazine because customers love things that are quick and don't take a lot of time to do. Fashion ideas based on celebrities should also be included to allow individuals to connect with famous icons and get inspiration on how to dress for certain occasions.

3. Genre Conventions: Production Techniques

Layout: The magazine cover analysis above shows that the layout always starts with the masthead. This is the title of the magazine and shows the name of the publisher. Next you will notice the main image, which is the shot of the model usually in the middle of the cover. The main headings included in the cover should correlate with the main image and be in a different font/ size than the other text. Sub-headings or cover lines are the supporting characters in a magazine. They break the magazine into categories and demonstrate the different topics that what will be shown inside. The date can be placed at either the top or bottom of the magazine cover and this tells readers when the magazine was published. A bar code is always shown at the bottom and allows distributers to identify the magazine and then sell it.

Colors: Color is a very important part of beauty magazines. Using bright colors can grab the readers attention. For example, in my sample #1 below the use of the color black in the masthead and the cover lines make the cover look elegant and chic. The red lettering brings the focus on the phrase "Make your look over". Choosing a specific color palette and making sure not to overload with color is a very important part of developing a beauty magazine.

4. Institutional Conventions: How is the genre marketed?

The target audience for beauty magazines are women of all ages. There is something for everyone. These magazines may mention new clothing styles, helpful makeup tips, skincare and dozens of ways to style your hair. Middle-aged women are usually the majority consumer for products, but in beauty magazines, millennial women greatly out number this statistic. They are the highest buyers of beauty magazines and products. 

Marketing techniques: Beauty magazines will add certain advertisements and brands to attract different audiences. Magazines will also recruit famous individuals to model for their cover. The fans of these celebrities will then buy the magazine which will increase its revenue. 

5. Sample #1

This example of a magazine cover falls under the beauty category perfectly. The main image is showing Khloe Kardashian, a famous American media personality. The headings and cover lines attract individuals by including words like sexy, fast and easy. These specific words are important because they will engage the reader. The red and black colors make the magazine seem sophisticated and classy. The font has a sort of girly look to it, which we can conclude that this magazine is intended for women. This is a demonstration of a medium long shot and shows Khloe's gorgeous dress, hair and makeup.

Allure is a very famous women's fashion and beauty magazine. The main image is showing Julia Roberts, a famous actress. She is also a mother which may attract middle-aged/older women to read this magazine. This is a close up shot and focuses on Julia's hair, makeup and skin. The heading that states "260 Winning..." is in a larger font and is meant to attract readers to the best beauty products at that time.

Beauty magazines are usually represented with beautiful women. They are most likely skinny, have smooth skin and perfect teeth. Young girls can become self conscious while looking at these magazines of flawless women and then comparing themselves to the pictures. When in reality these cover shots are tremendously edited and are not realistic. Magazines are now starting to understand the new standard of beauty and are changing up their old ways.
